What To Do After An Accident

Practical Steps Every Driver Should Know

Accidents happen in an instant, but the physical and financial damage can be long term. The steps you take immediately after a car accident can help protect your right to receive insurance benefits and financial compensation in a personal injury claim.

For over 45 years, the Bronx-based attorneys at Getz & Braverman, P.C., have been helping clients injured in New York City recover financially after car, truck and other vehicle accidents. Based on their experience, they offer the following tips for what to do after an accident:

  • Check to see if anyone is injured — Check yourself first. If you or anyone else is injured, call an ambulance.
  • Get your car off the road if possible and turn on your flashers.
  • Call the police to report the accident, even if it is minor.
  • Exchange information with the other driver or drivers:
    • Insurance information
    • Names, addresses and phone numbers of others involved and any witnesses
    • Makes, models and license numbers of the vehicles involved
  • Take photographs of the scene, of your vehicle and of other vehicles if you have a camera or camera phone available.
  • Do not admit to any fault or accuse others.
  • Do not sign anything without consulting a personal injury lawyer.
  • Do not make statements about the accident or your injuries to anyone other than the police until you speak to a lawyer.
  • File a police report and call law enforcement to the scene — get a copy of the report or ask the officer for the report number.
  • Seek medical attention and follow the directions and advice of emergency medical personnel.
  • Contact your insurance provider to report the accident, damages and injuries as soon as possible, but do not make statements about fault or your actions prior to the accident without consulting a personal injury lawyer.
